LEARNING TO DRIVE

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Learning to drive can, and should, be an exciting, satisfying and rewarding experience for you. However, as with anything new, there are likely to be some aspects of learning to drive that worry you. Most probably, other learners have had the same concerns before you. Here are some of the frequently asked questions (FAQ) about learning to drive that we often hear, together with our responses:

Q:  How much do you charge?

A: This is invariably the first question we get asked by potential new customers! But think about it-choosing a driving instructor simply on grounds of cost may not be wise. Driving is a life skill-the consequences of bad driving arising from poor or sub-standard instruction could be disastrous. Would you want your heart surgeon to be the best at his job, or the cheapest you could find?  We are proud of our Grade 6 rating-the highest rating you can achieve. This means we have been assessed by the Driving Standards Agency Senior Examiner as “excellent”-only 7 out of 100 qualified driving instructors ever reach Grade 6-we started off there and have remained there.  So by all means call another 100 local driving instructors-93 of them could not match our standard of teaching. Q: I am very nervous about learning to drive. Can you teach nervous learners?

A: Absolutely. Even the most accomplished driver was nervous when they started to drive, and anybody who says otherwise is not telling the truth! The trouble is most drivers quickly forget how hard it was at first, once driving becomes second nature.

It is natural to be anxious about something you’ve not done before. We take pride in our professional and patient approach to teaching driving: we will start at the very beginning if you’ve never driven before, and patiently explain each step in simple stages, so that you learn at your own pace.

Q: What are the lessons like?

A: We normally start each lesson with an illustrated theory briefing on the topic, followed by you having a go under full step-by-step instruction. Sometimes, we find it is helpful for us to demonstrate a technique to help you understand. As you get more confident with a new skill, we reduce the amount of instruction we give, so that you get used to making decisions for yourself-but we are always there to help you out if you get it wrong. In this way, each lesson builds on the skills developed in earlier lessons so that you acquire the necessary confidence and driving skills in a progressive way.  We carefully choose our training routes so that you are not exposed to difficult or heavy traffic situations until you are good and ready for them. Our training car is fitted with dual controls, so you have the assurance that even if the worst happens when you’re driving, we can stop the car quickly and safely.
